But at some point Xi locked everyone down and had almost daily testing for Covid. Xi obviously believed Covid was a thing. I'd be interested in your analysis on China's response.

I've said elsewhere that Americans writ large were not "afraid" of coronavirus reports out of China or panicked by the staged videos of people dropping dead in the street. Safe to say that (like myself) most Americans distrust whatever the CCP is claiming. They might have had slightly more trust in the WHO's assessment, but it was really Northern Italy that convinced Americans - and in particular American healthcare workers - that something real and serious was happening. (We tend to love Italy and all things Italian.)
